The “SOS youths” collected the first opinions and proposals for a reform in education

22/02/10

The youth campaign “SOS – Save the Education Now!” continues. The first mobile tent was situated in front of the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library on the 22nd of February. During the whole afternoon the young people collected the opinions and proposals of the citizens regarding the upcoming reform in higher education. For this specific target there were computers situated in the tent, which were constantly showing the campaign clips and there was a video corner, in which every person who wanted to, could record their message in front of a camera with their massage to the Minister of Education, Youth and Science. On a special notebook, also specifically for this target, everyone who had ideas, proposals or criticism regarding the sphere of education could share them. In the end of the day there were three video messages recorded and over twenty people left their proposals in the notebook. After the end of the campaign everything collected by the mobile teams during the travel in the country will be handed personally to Mr. Ignatov – Minister of Education, Youth and Science. The idea of the young is to be precisely in the centre of the reform and to be the ones who shall set the direction of the new law regarding higher education.

The campaign started unofficially on the Internet space before one month and its target is a reform in higher education. A group on Facebook, a blog, video and audio clips, posters and brochures are some of the means that the young use to try to reach the public and especially to the university students. “We want to study in Bulgaria”, “We don’t want just diplomas, we want real knowledge” and “We don’t want corruption in education” are the main highlights of the campaign.

The mobile tent will be in Sofia for two more days, after which the teams will split up and go to the four corners of the country. They will be traveling to all of the university centers and regional cities in Bulgaria till the middle of March.

The “SOS – Save the Education Now” campaign has started

21/02/10

University students and citizens will be giving suggestions for a reform in higher education. This is part of the campaign “SOS – Save the Education Now”, which partners are Darik Radio, Nova Television and the newspaper “Standart”. The campaign is held with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science.

One of the main reasons for the start of the campaign is the dissatisfaction of the young people in Bulgaria from the higher education. Some of the messages of the campaign are: “We want to study in Bulgaria”, “We don’t want corruption in education” and “We don’t want just diplomas, we want real knowledge”.

The “SOS – Save the Education Now” campaign will popularise and explain to university students and citizens the reform in higher education. This will happen through the traveling SOS tents. The main body of the campaign consists of thirty people who will divide into four mobile teams. They will be moving during the weekends and in each day they will be in four different regional cities and will be situated in central places in the cities their tents are located. There will be campaign materials, video clips will be rotated and the faces of the campaign will be personally explaining the reform in the higher education to everyone who is keen to learn more. Combined with this the tents will have a video corner, where everyone could tape their suggestion, opinion or message regarding higher education.

A group was opened on the social network “Facebook” titled “SOS – Save the Education Now” in the end of December. To this moment there are over 10 000 people who have joined.

The rectors should not be involved in public procurements, because in this way the universities will be transformed into firm. This was said by Mr. Ignatov – Minister of Education, Youth and Science during the announcement of the “SOS – Save the Education Now” campaign. According to the minister after the new law for higher education is passed from a total of 51 universities in Bulgaria 10 will remain genuine.

15/12/09

MGERB started a national initiative, which goes under the title of “The University Idea Today – Plan your future flexibly”. The target of the initiative is to support the reforms in university education and the changes to the Law of University Education in particular. The initiative took hold during the week of the University Student’s Day – the 8th of December in all regions of Bulgaria with universities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad, Veliko Turnovo, Varna and Burgas, as well as the big resorts Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo and Arbanassi. Those were a small part of the places where the young people popularised the ideas of the government of GERB for reforms in education.

The target of MGERB was to show their fellow youth that the reforms which began in university education are targeted towards them. That those reforms have the target to improve their status as university students, to make the educational system more precise, to improve the way that exams are held and the scoring process in particular, as well as guarantee better cooperation between business and the academic circles.

“Be innovative” and “Invest in yourself” are only some of the messages that the young deliver to their fellow university students on the day of their holiday.
